It has never advanced to the finals of any major international competition. For the Euro 2004, Iceland were led by Asgeir Sigurvinsson topping the group table for a while, with 4 wins and even held Germany to a 0–0 draw in Reykjavík, however both Germany and Scotland had a game in hand to them and both used them to their maximum potential, with Scotland beating Lithuania and Germany beat Scotland in Germany's penultimate game. Iceland failed to grind a result in their final game against Germany, and Scotland pipped them to a play-off place. Iceland have failed to match this since, finishing on just 4 points for the 2006 World Cup qualifiers and 8 points from their Euro 2008 qualifying campaign.Iceland were knocked out in the quarter finals of the 2001 Millennium Super Cup to a Chilean Football League XI, this was following a 3-0 victory over hosts India.Perhaps its most notable match was a friendly against Estonia on 24 April 1996 in Tallinn. During the second half of this match, Eiður Guðjohnsen entered as a substitute for his father Arnór. This marked the first time that a father and son played in the same international match. Another landmark for Icelandic football was the 2–0 upset victory over Italy in a friendly at Laugardalsvöllur, 18 August 2004[1] with 20,204 fans in attendance, an Icelandic record.[2]Contents1 Notable results2 World Cup record3 European Championship record4 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification5 Current Squad5.1 Recent call-up6 Famous players6.1 Most capped Icelandic players6.2 Top Icelandic goalscorers6.3 National coaches7 References8 External links//[edit] Notable resultsDateHomeResultAway11 June 1977Iceland1–0Northern Ireland24 September 1980Turkey1–3Iceland9 September 1987Iceland2–1Norway17 July 1991Iceland5–1Turkey25 September 1991Iceland2–0Spain19 August 1998Iceland4–1Latvia5 September 1998Iceland1–1France14 October 1998Iceland1–0Russia1 September 2001Iceland3–1Czech Republic19 October 2003Iceland0–0Mexico18 August 2004Iceland2–0Italy17 August 2005Iceland4–1South Africa2 September 2006Northern Ireland0–3Iceland8 September 2007Iceland1–1Spain12 September 2007Iceland2–1Northern Ireland[edit] World Cup record1930 to 1950 – Did not enter1954 – Entry not accepted by FIFA1958 – Did not qualify1962 to 1970 – Did not enter1974 to 2006 – Did not qualify[edit] European Championship record1960 – Did not enter1964 – Did not qualify1968 – Did not enter1972 – Did not enter1976 to 2008 – Did not qualify[edit] 2010 FIFA World Cup qualificationTeamPldWDLGFGAGDPts Netherlands00000000 Scotland00000000 Norway00000000 FYR Macedonia00000000 Iceland00000000 –15 Oct '086 Jun '095 Sep '0910 Sep '08 10 Jun '09–10 Sep '085 Sep '096 Sep '08 11 Oct '081 Apr '09–10 Jun '0928 Mar '09 6 Sep '089 Sep '0915 Oct '08–19 Aug '09 1 Apr '095 Sep '099 Sep '0911 Oct '08–[edit] Current SquadCalled up for the friendly match against Slovakia on March 26, 2008.No.Pos.PlayerDoB (Age)CapsGoalsClubGKKjartan Sturluson27 December 197540 ValurGKStefán Logi Magnússon5 September 198010 KRDFHermann Hreiðarsson11 July 1974755 PortsmouthDFKristján Örn Sigurðsson7 October 1980282 BrannDFGrétar Rafn Steinsson9 January 1982243 Bolton WanderersDFRagnar Sigurðsson19 June 198490 IFK GöteborgDFAtli Sveinn Þórarinsson24 January 198070 ValurDFBjarni Ólafur Eiríksson28 March 198260 ValurMFJónas Guðni Sævarsson28 November 198341 KRMFAron Gunnarsson22 April 198930 Coventry CityMFStefán Gíslason15 March 1980220 BrøndbyMFBjarni Þór Viðarsson5 March 198810 FC TwenteMFTheódór Elmar Bjarnason4 March 198750 LynMFEmil Hallfreðsson29 June 1989131 RegginaMFÓlafur Ingi Skúlason1 April 198360 HelsingborgMFEggert Gunnþór Jónsson18 August 198810 HeartsFWEiður Guðjohnsen15 September 19785020 BarcelonaFWVeigar Páll Gunnarsson21 March 1980192 StabækFWGunnar Heiðar Þorvaldsson1 April 1982195 Esbjerg fBFWHelgi Sigurðsson14 September 19746210 ValurFWTryggvi Guðmundsson30 July 19744212 FH[edit] Recent call-upThe following players have also been called up to the Iceland squad.[when?]GoalkeepersNameDate of birthClubCaps (goals)Most Recent Call upFjalar ÞorgeirssonJanuary 18, 1977 Fylkir3 (0)v.
