Seeking my QuicksilverIn Fast Company, I saw an article about Quicksilver sponsoring six women in an open to the public storefront:SiteLA itself carries little financial risk -- the whole yearlong project will cost less than a Super Bowl spot, about $2.5 million. But Quiksilver Women's success will require authenticity: A grassroots campaign (cool chicks doing cool stuff!) that's wholly synthetic (Quiksilver presents the eco-friendly Spice Girls!) is an odd way to start. If Quicksilver can blow 2.5 million dollars sponsoring an architect, a singer-songwriter, a designer and others, a sports-related company has to have 2 million to waste on a sports academy which could change the way we think about youth sports and athlete development in the USA. After all, these women produce products unrelated to Quicksilver; my idea could put a sports company at the forefront of the constantly shifting sports culture.Posted byBrian McCormickat9/05/2008 03:08:00 PM0commentsLabels:adidas,Li Ning,New Balance,Nike,Peak,Pony,Puma,Quicksilver,Reebok, sports academy,Under Armour

The Life I Lead...Last week, I received an email from a guy who wanted to meet, though he was unsure of the purpose of our meeting. As we conversed, he made a comment about my lifestyle and said, "Personally, I think a 32-year-old should own a house and hold a full-time job." This, of course, followed closely on his comments about having to make more money to afford his mortgage. My mom tried to get me to buy into the market when the market peaked and it seemed like everyone was buying a house and anyone could get a loan. Of course, many of these people have now foreclosed or lost money as the value of their home depreciates in the current market. So, was it a bad decision not to buy a house?I don't dream of home ownership like most other people. I like my apartment. I watched my childhood home drain my dad's pocketbook as it fell into disrepair as racoons camped out underneath the house, chewing on the air conditioning to keep themselves cool, and the pool breaking nearly every week. I know I'm different than most, but I don't want a yard, a picket fence and a pool; I want an apartment or condo overlooking a public park where I can run or play hoops or walk a dog. I don't want to spend my free time taking care of a seldom-used yard when I can use public facilities which my taxes pay for anyway. As for a permanent job, I like moving. I like meeting new people. I don't see it as a personal liability that I have lived in Los Angeles, Santa Cruz, Santa Monica, Sweden, Sacramento, Portland, Ireland, San Diego and Irvine since I graduated from college. I like the experience. As for work, I'm just not cut out for the 9-5. However, in the last 12 months, I've published three new books, re-written two other books, written programs for two online start-ups and coached high school volleyball and basketball. It's no day at the office, but I'm pretty content with the life I lead. The guy's comment just seems to illustrate the fact that people have a narrow vision of the way people are supposed to live. I don't know that there is one way anyone is supposed to live. I know one of my best friends loves being married, having a son and owning his house. I can't imagine having a kid right now and love traveling and being free to do what I want. Is he better than me because he lives the "American Dream?" Am I better because I travel the world? No. Life isn't a competition. There is no predefined "best way" to live. It's about finding a way to do that which makes you happy. Just because I find happiness in atypical ways does not mean I lack responsibility or maturity, as this guy insinuated. I'm merely able to thrive in a life without stability which most people cannot handle. That's not good or bad. It's just the way I live.Posted byBrian McCormickat9/03/2008 05:55:00 PM0commentsLabels:home ownership,Life, maturity, the american dream, values

CreativityI frequently write about creativity. I wrote an article a couple years ago titled, "The Mechanization of the Modern Player," where I argued that players' creativity is drilled out of them during practices. I feel that we need a new system of development which enhances and nurtures players' creativity rather than constantly suppressing it. We complain about players lack of basketball IQ, but coaches take away all decision-making. How can players develop creativity and a higher level of understanding if they are never given the freedom to try new moves or make decisions? I received the following video from Mike McKay of Canada Basketball. The talk is about creativity in the educational system, but it very closely parallels the problems in the basketball development system as well. BlogsA friend who makes his living on computers emailed me a blog which he suggested was the "modern day" blog and a model for my blogs. The blog had zero design and most of the posts were simply links to stuff that other people had written. Is that the future of blogs? A couple years ago, my friend and I became convinced that some strength trainers became "experts" simply because they wrote articles online and referenced each other. Rarely did they ever actually write anything original or provide any of their own research. Instead, they wrote and referenced each other. My referencing an associate, they established the associate as the expert. Then, when the associate referenced them, the expert/associate established them as an expert. Soon, many of these guys were "experts" who were everywhere on the Internet, speaking at dozens of conventions and making a good living. Just because they spent a lot of time writing and referencing each other. My friend and I were amazed that people did not see through their gimmick. Is that the purpose of blogs now? Do blogs establish people as experts in their field? Are the best blogs those that simply link to other blogs? These have a purpose, as everyone needs an easier path to their desired information. Is this the googlification of America? The person who provides access to the information is now more powerful and more important than the one who creates the information.Posted byBrian McCormickat8/19/2008 07:09:00 PM2commentsLabels:bloggers,blogs,google,internet marketing gimmicks

Going GreenAt my local grocery store, they offer reusable shopping bags for sale as part of their effort to go green. However, the cheap plastic disposable bags remain free of charge. If you are going to make an effort to change people's habits, shouldn't you make it easier to change than to stay the same?In Europe (well, Ireland and Sweden), I had to pay for a plastic bag to use to carry the groceries out of the store. Therefore, it saved me money to change my habits and use my backpack rather than a reusable plastic bag.Change is hard. If companies really want to change the way people act, they should offer a one-time free reusable bag and charge for the cheap disposable plastic bags. Or, since every grocery store uses a rewards card, charge people for the reusable bag, but give the consumer a discount every time he uses the bag. These ideas make change easier. They give people an incentive to change which is far more personal than "saving the earth." By affecting people's pocketbook, you can affect their actions in a far greater way and create a habit which becomes normal, just as using an excessive number of cheap plastic bags is normal today.Posted byBrian McCormickat8/13/2008 05:29:00 PM4commentsLabels:changing actions, going green, grocery stores, smart thinking

Going Above and Not Quite BeyondLast Thursday I took my car to get an oil change. Nothing special. Just went to a quick oil change chain on my way to a workout. Everything was great. When I got in my car to leave, I was surprised to see they had washed my windows. A nice touch, I thought. They were pretty dirty. But, then I noticed that they missed several big spots.Rather than leaving impressed with the place, but looking through dirty windows, or enamored with the place because of the service and pristine windows, I started to wonder about the quality of the work under the hood. If they can't take the time to get the spots off my window as they wipe them clean, did they take the time to change my oil correctly and top off all the necessary fluids? Doing more than expected is a great way to secure repeat business. However, if you are going to do it, do it. Otherwise, the almost going beyond the norm is worse than not adding anything extra.Posted byBrian McCormickat8/10/2008 08:25:00 PM0commentsLabels:customer service, fulfilling expectations

Life Revolves around MarketingOn my flight home from Trinidad, I read the latest issue of Inc. The cover story is about a guy who started a gym in Gainesville, Florida.I read the article. Maybe I missed the point, but I did not see a noteworthy story. Instead, I saw evidence of the ills of the training industry. Not once in the entire article does it mention training clients or anything even on the topic of exercise. Of course it is a business-centered article, but I could not speak about my business without talking about my training methodology: to me, the way I train IS the business.Unfortunately, as I have learned, marketing, hype and sales are more important than actuall skills or talents in the area of your business. If you are a college student or young businessmen, learn the art of marketing above all else. I used to believe talent wins in the end; now, I believe in the power of marketing. If you named the best hamburger you have ever eaten, would you name McDonald's? Yet, McDonald's has served billions. In the training industry, I interviewed at 24-Hour Fitness, one of the top brands in fitness. I interviewed for a job as a personal trainer, but every question centered on sales experience and my ability to push nutritional supplements on members. I walked out of the interview before it concluded - if I went to be a salesmen, I'd sell real estate, not $15 tubs of whey protein. On the other hand, I worked at a small personal training studio. The two trainers were myself and another guy who previously had been the Strength Coach at Oregon State University and now at Stanford University. The business went out of business because the owner did not market the product well-enough to generate sales.Unfortunately, great marketing and an average product tends to beat a great product with average marketing. Look at Nike. I have had one pair of Nike shoes that I really liked: when I was 16. This decade, every Nike shoe I have owned has fallen apart. When I lived in Portland, I traded in three pairs of shoes in five months at the NikeTown. Almost every other brand of shoe is made as well or better than Nike. But, Nike is the retail giant because its marketing is so far ahead of the other brands. Nike and Phil Knight get all the credit, but Wieden + Kennedy is the real force behind the Nike brand.I am an idea guy. I used to believe in the power of the product. But, not anymore. If you want to be successful, learn to market yourself or your business or align yourself with a marketing guy. At the end of the day, marketing wins.Posted byBrian McCormickat8/06/2008 11:17:00 AM0commentsLabels:Inc,marketing,McDonald's,Nike,Wieden + KennedyOlder PostsSubscribe to:Posts (Atom)
