Simpsonville Laborday Festival 2008
This years Simpsonville Laborday Festival was a huge success in many ways!! The success of Upstate Karate’s participation in the Festival was even more significant in terms of the “student body” turn out for our show. I really want to thank all of the participants for giving of their time and energy to make our part in the Laborday Festival enjoyable for all the kids (and adults) that come to see our show. As you my already know Upstate Karate has been a part of the Simpsonville Laborday Festival for more than 20 (not sure how much more) and plays a BIG part in the Festival. Your participation in our show helped to put smiles on ALL the faces that came to watch!! As I watched I was able to see what the crowds expressions would be as you performed. There wasn’t a frown to be seen even on the faces of the OTHER martial arts school that performed just before us. They too were smiling and applauding your efforts as you “brought the show”!!! IT WAS AWESOME!!! I want to especially thank our Senior students that participated in this years event. The “Senior” participation has been sparce in years past but this year was different. Thank you soooo much for your unselfish effort in supporting our school, our community and our fans!! I also want to thank the parents that brought their child to the Festival to be a part in our show. THAT is were the real show was!! Our Juniors looked so good out there firing those blocks, kicks and punches off with the precision of a world class athlete, like Mr. Stephen! I also want to thank the S.W.A.T. and S.T.O.R.M Team members that participated. Your help and support was VERY important to us! Finally our All Star Demonstration Team, you guys WERE GREAT!! As you performed the crowd couldn’t help but get into the act by clapping and cheering. MAN IT WAS GREAT!!! Did I say it WAS GREAT!! Finally the Senior Leaders of our All Star Team, Mr. Stephen, Ms. Becki, Mr. Cody and Mr. Joseph, your leadership is VITAL to the success of our Team AND to the success of all the students and fans that were able to enjoy the hard work you put into the Team. Thank you ALL. Now let’s get back at it, we’ve got work to do.

August 16th 2008 Blackbelt Test
Many of you have heard your karate teachers say the phrase “practicing your karate techniques are important because you never know when you might need them”!! Well, on August 16th, 2008 four of your Senior Black Belts were thrown into the fire and had to prove this phrase true. Mr. Stephen, Ms. Rebecca Verdin, Mrs. Kristen Hallman and Mrs. Kristen Finkelstein tested for their next level of Black Belt. Mr. Stephen tested for 5th degree Black Belt and the ladies tested for their 2nd degree in our Kempo Karate System. The test was very exciting as they proved their metal. The test lasted aprox. 4 ½ hours and was nonstop Kata, empty hand self defense techniques, weapons defense techniques against stick, gun and knife attacks as well as various sparring situations. ALL the candidates passed the tests that were put before them. They proved the phrase we are constantly bombarding you with to be true. So, do as we say and keep training BECAUSE you never know when you will be put to the test!!! I also want to let the new Black Belts know how proud of you I am!!! You represent yourself, our system and our school VERY well!

Welcome to Ray Thompson's Upstate Karate Martial Arts Center, serving the upstate since 1983. Our Black Belt Martial Arts School is dedicated to helping our students develop confidence through self-defense skills.
Our modern teaching techniques focus on the nature and structure of conflicts, and how we can resolve them peacefully. Safety is always our greatest concern. We have a genuine interest in our student's progress and development. Our staff is willing to go the extra mile for you!
Our qulified instructors are energetic and outgoing. They have a sincere interest in your self-improvement, and in helping you reach your goals. With seven different Martial Arts styles to choose from, we have something for everyone. Upstate Karate is currently ranked as one of the top 25 Martial Arts Schools in all of America, Canada, Great Britain, and Australia.
Our facility is approximately 12,000 square feet and provides showers, dressing rooms, and a TV/Video area for the entertainment of children not attending classes. The school is equipped with high quality mats for the comfort and safety of our students plus training mirrors to aid in their progress.
We are also equipped with a regulation kickboxing ring for sparring and promoted events. In the training area, there are many different hanging bags for the students to workout with as they strive to improve their skills.
