It is historically one of the weakest teams in CONMEBOL. After playing in the 1930 and 1950 World Cups, they qualified just once -- in 1994. There, playing champions Germany in the tournament's opening game in Chicago, Bolivia lost 1-0 as Marco Etcheverry, considered the nation's best player of the 1990s, got sent off just three minutes after coming on as a substitute. They never advanced past the first round of any World Cup, but did win the Copa América once, in 1963.Contents1 High altitude2 Competitive Record2.1 FIFA World Cup record2.2 Copa America Record2.3 Pan American Games record3 Famous players4 Records4.1 Most capped players4.2 Top goalscorers5 Recent and future international matches6 Current Squad6.1 Recent Call-ups7 Titles//[edit] High altitudeSince FIFA considered that high altitude football stadiums represent a high risk to the footballers health, a ban for stadiums above the 2500 meters (1.5 miles) above the sea level was imposed. As the Estadio Hernando Siles in La Paz, Bolivia, is sited at 3637 meters (2.3 miles) above sea level, official football matches were banned from this stadium, although FIFA later stated that only the games for the World Cup Qualifiers were banned from this stadium, statement that went against the purpose of banning games, since the health of footballers that played in international tournaments such as the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana would be risked. As a result, FIFA backed down acknowledging Bolivia the right to pick La Paz as their main venue, alleging its historic relevancy through out Bolivian football history. So far FIFA hasn't provided proper studies about the consequences of playing football at either high altitudes, high temperatures or polluted environments. La Paz is known as the preparation venue of many international athletes, such as multiple world champion and Olympic Games gold and silver medal winner Chris Hoy.[edit] Competitive Record[edit] FIFA World Cup recordYearRoundYearRound 1930Round 1 1974Did not Qualify 1934Did not Enter 1978Did not Qualify 1938Did Not Enter 1982Did not Qualify 1950Round 1 1986Did not Qualify 1954Did not Enter 1990Did not Qualify 1958Did not Enter 1994Round 1 1962Did not Qualify 1998Did not Qualify 1966Did not Qualify 2002Did not Qualify 1970Did not Qualify 2006Did not QualifyTotal3/18[edit] Copa America RecordCopa America/South American ChampionshipTotal: 1 TitleYearPositionYearPositionYearPosition 1916No Participation 1939Withdrew 1967Six Place 1917No Participation 1941Withdrew1975Round 1 1919No Participation 1942Withdrew1979Round 1 1920No Participation 1945Six Place1983Round 1 1921No Participation 1946Six Place 1987Round 1 1922No Participation 1947Seventh Place 1989Round 1 1923No Participation 1949Fourth Place 1991Round 1 1924No Participation 1953Six Place 1993Round 1 1925No Participation 1955Withdrew 1995Quarterfinals 1926Fifth Place 1956Withdrew 1997Runners-up 1927Fourth Place 1957Withdrew 1999Round 1 1929Withdrew 1959Seventh Place 2001Round 1 1935Withdrew 1959Withdrew 2004Round 1 1937Withdrew 1963Winners 2007Round 1[edit] Pan American Games record1951 to 1971 - Did not compete1975 - Round 21979 to 2003 - Did not compete2007 - Fourth place[edit] Famous players This article or section may contain original research or unverified claims. Please improve the article by adding references.
