Arete Swim Camp 2008

“Coach Warner spoke with my child for 2 minutes and it stayed with him and motivated him the whole year.”
“A group of swimmers from our club team attended Arete Swim Camp and had the time of their lives!”
The word “arête” is the Greek for champion or “achievement everlasting”. Chuck Warner’s Arête Swim Camp at Rutgers University combines the development of an individual’s character with that of their swimming skills and conditioning. This process helps each individual begin the journey to becoming a “champion of themself”. In the past seven years, many swimmers at Arête have begun or continued that journey toward success. The camp has met with very high acclaim and has sold out each of its sessions by March.
One of the unique features of the camp is the instructional and self-esteem development of each camper. Pool instruction is conducted with a coach to swimmer ration of one to nine (or less). Swimmers receive feedback after every drill or exercise with coaches positioned at both ends of the 25 yard pool. Instruction by coaches in and out of the pool strives to increase the camper’s self-image and self-esteem as a swimmer and as a person.
The Arête Swim Camp is open to swimmers with limited competitive swimming experience through national level athletes. Swimmers should be capable of swimming 50 yards of butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle. Resident campers must be between the ages of nine and eighteen and day campers can be as young as eight years old.
Coach Chuck Warner
Coach Chuck Warner begins his eleventh year as the Head coach of Rutgers University. During his tenure the Rutgers program has been among the most improved in the country.
Success is a trademark of the Connecticut native who has coached seven national championship teams, three Olympic gold medalists, three USA National Teams (Pan-American Team, US National Junior Team and the World University Games Team) as well as being an Olympic Advisory Coach for the 1992 US Olympic Team. In 2007 the Rutgers team was one of the largest producers of USA National Team members. Three swimmers represented the USA including Kelly Harrigan who won a gold medal at the World University Games in Bangkok. Coach Warner has spent his entire career with the mission of helping swimmers become a success in life by learning to be a success in swimming. Coach Warner is on deck working with campers every day.
Staff
The coaching and counselor staff are selected by the Camp Director and Coach Warner. We look for people who are experienced in coaching, but also have a love for children and will coach in the "ARETE style;" which is in a positive, constructive manner. We have head college coaches, high school coaches, club coaches and members of the Rutgers Men and Women's Swim Team all a part of our staff each year.
Ed Pretre
Ed Pretre starts his second year with Scarlet Knights after serving as an assistant coach at Princeton University where he coached several Ivy League finalists. He was also the Head Coach of the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA for seven years. His success includes a National YMCA Champion, several YMCA All-Americans, junior and U Open qualifiers.
Ann Doyle
Ann Doyle is in her first as Arête Swim Camp Director following several years Head Counselor and coach. Her years of coaching include, most recently, age group coach at Summit YMCA. She is a graduate of the University of Virginia and was a member of their first women’s varsity swim team. Coach Ann also has a business degree from the University of Massachusetts. She particularly enjoys working with young age group swimmers.
Parent and Camper Orientation
On Sunday afternoon prior to the start of each session, Arête Swim Camp holds an important orientation for both parents and campers. Held immediately after registration (5:00 pm) it is essential for resident and day campers and lasts about 45 minutes. Campers will meet with their counselors and parents will hear from Coach Warner regarding camp operations and procedures. He will lend his 30 years of experience in addressing how parents can best maximize their swimmers enjoyment and success in swimming.
Mental Training
People often say “sports are 90% mental and 10%”- physical and then spend little time on the 90%.At the Arete Swim Camp we devote a portion of each day (Monday through Thursday to the “mental side” of swimming. One of those sessions is a presentation and discussion about good nutrition for athletes. The other three days are devoted to a variety of goal-oriented games and exercises that explore the mental side of swimming fast and succeeding in life. Campers always enjoy this part of the day.
Video Analysis
Each camper receives an individual underwater video to take home at the end the session. The taping utilizes a tracking system and each swimmer is taped for 25 yards in all four strokes. Each afternoon, the coach and swimmer analyze the stroke in a one-on-one session. The analysis takes place after the morning swim session and before the afternoon swim session for maximum learning and improvement.
Pool and Meeting Facilities
All pool sessions and most mental training, stroke lecture and video analysis take place in the state of the art Sonny Werblin Center. This beautiful facility was built in 1991 and is considered the finest collegiate
aquatic facility in the Northeast United States. Additional pictures and descriptions are available on the scarletknights.com web site.
Housing
Arete campers are housed in some of the most modern dormitories at Rutgers University. They are located in a quiet area and feature, modern sprinkler systems and state of the art electronic security systems.
Meals and Snacks
Meals are served in the new Busch Campus Dining Center. It is located in the Busch Campus Student Center and offers excellent, nutritional food in a clean relaxed environment. The variety and quality offered always receives “rave reviews” from our campers. The Busch Campus Dining Center is conveniently located within a short walking distance of the Werblin Center.
Resident campers eat breakfast, lunch and dinner at the Busch Campus Dining Center and day campers eat lunch there as well. After each afternoon swimming session all campers receive a light, healthy snack.
The cost of all meals and snacks is included in the camp fees.
Ropes Course
One evening of each session, campers have the unique opportunity of participating in a special activity which allows them to transfer their camp experience into a team and alternative adventure. A professionally trained staff will lead the campers through a series of “low ropes” exercises at the recreation facilities directly across from the Sonny Werblin Center. It is often one of the highlights of the Arete Swim Camp experience.
Supervision
All campers are closely and continuously supervised. Campers are expected to abide by the behavioral standards established by the camp staff.
