D.C. United captured their second U.S. Open Cup championship with a 2-1 win over the Charleston Battery of the USL First Division. Luciano Emilio scored in the fifth minute when the ball was cleared just outside the box, and while striking the ball he slips onto the turf, but somehow finds a way to put it in the upper 90 to give D.C. United the lead. Emilio injured himself on the play, hurting his groin, and he had to be subsequently subbed out of the match. Charleston answered five minutes later after Chris Williams found Ian Fuller deep in United territory, who fired a shot past DC goalkeeper Louis Crayton to level the match at 1-1. In the 51st minute, D.C. United midfielder Fred received a pass in behind the defense and beat Battery goalkeeper Dusty Hudock to give the home side a 2-1 lead. Fred’s goal would prove to be the game-winner despite some quality chances from the underdogs from South Carolina. It was the first Open Cup championship for United since they became the first MLS team to lift the trophy back in 1996 when they defeated the A-League’s Rochester Raging Rhinos 3-0.

USOpenCup.com is proud to announce that Seattle Sounders Goalkeeper Chris Eylander has been named the Player of the Tournament, as voted by the USOpenCup.com staff and members of the North American Soccer Reporters. Eylander edged out D.C. United forward Jamie Moreno to capture the honor.
Eylander’s 453 consecutive minutes of shutout goalkeeping set a Professional Era mark for an individual goalkeeper, as well as a single tournament team record. Eylander begin his shutout run in Phoenix in the Sounders Opening round 1-0 extra time win over NPSL club Arizona Sahuaros. Elyander played the full 120 minutes, making seven saves. Eylander’s next foe was Hollywood United. While Eylander made six saves in the Sounders' 6-0 win, none of the Hollywood chances gave him much trouble.
Seattle’s third round 2-0 win win over Chivas USA proved to a more challenging for Eylander, who made seven saves in the contest and was directly involved in the game-clinching goal. After saving Sacha Kljestan’s free kick in the 80th minute, Eylander punted the ball to the other end of the field. A Chivas defender tried to head the ball towards goalkeeper Brad Guzan, but Seattle’s Sebastien Le Toux got to the loose ball first and chipped it over Guzan’s head to give Seattle a commanding 2-0 lead.
Eylander was in net for another 120-minute affair in the quarterfinal, as Seattle played to a 0-0 draw with the Kansas City Wizards. Eylander saved 12 of the 19 shots taken by Kansas City, and then stepped up in the penalty tiebreaker, saving shots from Tyson Wahl and Jimmy Conrad to lead the Sounders to the semifinals. Eylander also earned Player of the Round honors from USOpenCup.com for his efforts.
Eylander’s run of shutout minutes came to an end against Charleston in the semifinals, as Randi Patterson notched a goal in the 33rd minute to end the streak. Eylander finished the tournament only allowing one goal in 510 minutes played, for an astounding 0.178 goals against average. Continue...

Two year USOC ban for Blanco
Mexican international sent off in quarterfinal loss to D.C. United
Cuauhtemoc Blanco has been banned from competing in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup for at least two years. The United States Soccer Federation completed a review of the incidents of the Chicago Fire’s 2-1 quarterfinal loss to D.C. United on July 8 and decided on the length of the suspension, which could be extended depending on the number of Open Cup games the Fire are involved in over the next two seasons.The Mexican international was shown a red card at the end of the first extra time period after throwing a punch at United midfielder Clyde Simms. After D.C.’s Marc Burch retaliated on his teammate’s behalf, Burch and Blanco were both sent off. Reportedly, as he left the field, a D.C. United official attempted to usher him from the sidelines toward the locker room, but the official was nearly head butted by the Chicago Fire star. Continue...

U.S. Open Cup champion to participate in CONCACAF Champions League
2007 champion, New England, will occupy one of the four USA spots
 The Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) announced the format of the 2008 CONCACAF Champions League today. 24 teams from Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica, Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Pamana, the Caribbean and the United States will take part in the tournament that will begin in late August and conclude in April of 2009.The Champions League will replace the Champions Cup tournament as the method of determining the CONCACAF representative in the FIFA Club World Cup. The United States will submit four representatives to the competition: the Major League Soccer (MLS) Cup champion and runner-up, the MLS regular season champion and the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup champion.
