AAHArefs | Atlantic Amateur Hockey Association Officiating Program Atlantic Amateur Hockey Association Officiating Program The Atlantic District Officiating Development Camp Celebrates Its Fifth Anniversary One of the unique opportunities that a few up-and-coming Atlantic District officials get each year is to participate in The Atlantic District Officiating Development Camp. This is a program that was launched in June 2004 by NHL Referee Ian Walsh. Ian grew up in the Atlantic District Officiating Program, lives in Philadelphia, and has been a member of the Atlantic District and USA Hockey instructional staffs for a long time.Ian says that the goal of the Atlantic District Officiating Development Camp is simply, "to get male and female officials ready for USA Hockey Eastern Regional Camp."Following the Example Set By MinnesotaThe idea for the development camp came to Ian six seasons ago when he was working on the staff of the USA Hockey Western Regional Camp. At that camp, he was impressed with how well the officials from Minnesota performed. Ian said.It wasn't like the kids from Minnesota were more physically talented than others, they were just well prepared. They came to camp in shape. {The men} were always clean shaven. They were never late for class. They did well on their runs. They all made a great first impression.Participants in regional camps typically only get to attend once. Lots of officials have arrived in the past with great potential and some significant local experience, but little knowledge of what to expect at the camp. The officials from Minnesota all looked like they knew what to expect and how to behave in every part of the program-- as if they had been there before.Ian did some investigation and found out that all of the officials nominated by the Minnesota District attended a pre-camp run by senior instructors from that area. The specific goal of this pre-camp was to inform Regional Camp nominees of what to expect, how to behave, and how to prepare to do well at the Western Regional Camp if they were selected.Getting the Camp Off the GroundIan approached Atlantic District Referee-in-Chief Tony Mariconda with the idea of organizing a similar camp for Atlantic District officials, and Tony enthusiastically approved it. Ian worked on the camp concept during the 2003-2004 season and held the first Atlantic District Officiating Development Camp in June 2004. This year marked the fifth anniversary. Ryan Honig looks at the game from an entirely different perspective. Ryan Honig officiating in the Boys' Nationalsat Ice House in Hackensack, NJ. [ Photo:USA Hockey Magazine ]When you’ve dedicated half of your life to wearing the stripes, it’s bound to have an impact on how you view the world. “I haven’t gone to an NHL game in 13 years and not watched the refs,” says the 26-year-old native of Hamburg, N.J. “And if you talk to all officials, that’s how they all are. We’re just able to relate to them more.”Players, parents and coaches participating in a USA Hockey National Championship may not be able to relate to the challenges of keeping law and order on the ice, but they have to respect the job done by those in stripes.Like the teams they judge, only the best are called to work a national tournament. And with so much riding on the line, only the strong survive. “They’re looking for the whole package,” says Honig, who worked his seventh USA Hockey National Championship this year at the Ice House in Hackensack, N.J.“You need to be an excellent skater, have excellent judgment and you have to know the rules. The more high level experience you have will definitely help because you’re not going to be feeling the pressure.” While Nationals are a big deal for everyone involved, a referee can’t afford to get caught up in the excitement.“As far as an official is concerned you’re going to go out and give your best every game,” said Honig, who has worked games from Peewee to minor pro hockey. “You have to block out what’s hap- pening around but you still notice it.”Even after miles around the rink, Honig fondly recalls his first National Championship experience. Coming in as an unknown commodity, Honig worked hard to catch the eye of the evaluators who carefully watch every game, and then took their critiques to heart.“I ended up being a linesman for the Peewee championship, which blew my expectations away,” he said. “I went out there seeking criticism from the evaluators and kept trying to hustle all the time. I thought that was a good foot in the door. Still, there is something special about working a National Championship tournament, where local New Jersey teams are facing off against teams from as far away as Los Angeles and Anchorage.“Just the atmosphere here is something. You get to see the hockey world come together which is pretty cool,” he said. “No matter how many of these you work, you still take pride that you’re here. It’s still a privilege to work these games but you know you can handle the situation.”Article by Harry Thompson, reprinted courtesy of USA Hockey Magazine. It is probably not a good idea to register with USAH until you are certain that you are attending a Seminar. These Seminars are for the 2007-08 season only - your registration will expire after Nov. 30, 2008. Just like all other officials in the country, you will then have to re-register and attend a new Seminar for the 2008-09 season. Those Seminars usually run from mid-August to early October in our District. In some areas, it is sometimes difficult to obtain game assignments during the summer since there are often fewer entry-level games. However, you would also be eligible to obtain game assignments once league play begins again around Labor Day. Joe Nardone suddenly passed away a few days before Christmas. Joe officiated hundreds of USA Hockey games in the Central New Jersey and Southeastern Pennsylvania area at many different levels. His loss is certainly a blow to officiating at the grassroots in his area.Joe is survived by his stepdaughter Kristin Geno.Joe's death was not well publicized within the officiating community. We hope that this message reaches officials who worked with him over the years. It is still possible to leave a note in Joe's memory on Legacy.com.
