Not soon after Carlos Delgado tied the game at 3-3 with a solo homer off reliever Rudy Seanez in the eighth inning, Phillies manager Charlie Manuel summoned Lidge. But what occurred in the following minutes defied most odds. But while that's a rightful target to vent your frustration, don't forget to include the offense as well.Sure, the Mets scored seven runs. On most days that is more than enough. But not a single run came across after the fourth inning. While the Phillies kept mounting one threat after another, the Mets failed to put runners in scoring position. What irks interim manager Jerry Manuel is that tack-on runs often serve as knockout punches. Had the Mets been able to generate more runs over the course of the game, they would have taken a considerable amount of pressure off the bullpen.Continue reading "New York Mets' power fades late in games" » Post a comment | View commentsSee more in Mets beat writers blog, Mets breaking news, Mets print edition stories from The Star-Ledger Game 134: Mets at Philliesby Jeremy CothranWednesday August 27, 2008, 5:58 PMMets (73-60, 2nd/-0.5)Jose Reyes SSLuis Castillo 2BDavid Wright 3BCarlos Delgado 1BCarlos Beltran CFRyan Church RFDaniel Murphy LFBrian Schneider CJohan Santana LHP (12-7, 2.64)Phillies (73-59, 1st/+0.5)Jimmy Rollins SSChase Utley 2BPat Burrell LFRyan Howard 1BShane Victorino CFJayson Werth RFPedro Feliz 3BChris Coste CKyle Kendrick RHP (11-7, 4.87)**Lots of stuff going on today, and not a lot of time to tell you because of work I need to accomplish for the paper...**Billy Wagner is making progress. Pedro Martinez coughed up a game he should have put in his pocket. David Wright and Carlos Delgado hit into inning-ending double plays. Luis Ayala joined the blown-save club. Phillies catcher Chris Coste entered the game in the eighth inning and managed to go 4-for-4 and get the game-winning hit. It was a 5-hour, 17-minute prizefight, like the ones at the end of the "Rocky" movies, and when it was finally over, it was pretty hard to draw any sweeping conclusions about the teams or the season. The Phillies are tough, the Mets can't add on runs and their bullpen is a nightly carnival ride. Niese could be named the fifth starter for the Mets next Tuesday.PHILADELPHIA -- When John Maine went on the 15-day disabled list Monday, it didn't just rob the rotation of a proven pitcher. Now the Mets will have to scramble to fill those starts. With a day off tomorrow, the Mets don't need a fifth starter until next Tuesday against the Brewers in Milwaukee. It's widely believed that could be left-hander Jonathan Niese from Triple-A New Orleans. The 21-year-old Niese, who is the Mets' top pitching prospect, is 5-1 with a 3.65 ERA in six starts with the Zephyrs. Because of the makeup of the pitchers, the Mets can't sustain a four-man rotation. Last night's starter, Pedro Martinez, needs regular rest, and ace Johan Santana prefers it. There is also the issue with Mike Pelfrey, who has already surpassed his innings total from 2007. It's painfully obvious these days what the script is for deconstructing the Mets: wear out the starting pitcher and feast off the bullpen. It all went according to plan in the Phillies' 8-7 win last night, a game that took 5 hours and 17 minutes to complete. In a season full of blown saves and heart-tugging losses, this one cost the Mets first place. With their win, the Phillies re-took the National League East crown by a ½ game. Bullpen failures helped cost the Mets a ticket to October last year, and this year could make for an identical scenario. The Phillies eventually tied the game in the bottom of the ninth with a clutch, two-out single from pinch-hitter Eric Bruntlett off newly branded closer Luis Ayala. It didn't end until early this morning, when Scott Schoeneweis (2-3) allowed a walk-off single to Chris Coste in the 13th. Shane Victorino, who led off the inning with a triple, scored the game-winning run. Adding to the misery is a likely stint on the disabled list for Ramon Castro. The backup catcher strained his right quad running to first, and had to leave the game. Given the way Castro winced, it's almost assured he will miss some time. It didn't help that Pedro Martinez let a sizeable lead evaporate. Handed a seven-run advantage, Martinez promptly gave up five runs to let the Phillies barge back into the game. Jamie Moyer was equally as unimpressive. He collected just nine outs, and allowed six runs in the process. Aaron Heilman proceeded to blow that lead, and Pedro Feliciano then gave up two home runs in the top of the 10th inning as the Mets lost their second straight game, 6-4.Catcher Brad Ausmus, who entered the game as a defensive replacement in the eighth inning, hit his second home run of the year to lead off the 10th against Feliciano, and Darin Erstad hit his third of the season, two outs later. The two home runs undid much of the work of the Mets' Carlos Beltran, who hit two homers of his own, in the first and fifth innings, off left-handed starter Randy Wolf. Beltran's second homer had given the Mets a 4-3 lead, but Heilman couldn't protect it.The loss reduced the Mets' lead to one game over the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East race.
