The Cubs offense was overly aggressive at the plate and wasted a very good outing on the road by Ted Lilly. Lilly made only one mistake on the night; he allowed his 22nd home run of the season to Carlos Lee in the 7th inning that tied the game. The monster shot to left cleared the railroad tracks above the Crawford Boxes. The original Cub Killer has hit 3 home runs this season against Cubs' pitching and 25 in his career. Lilly allowed just 3 hits before the 7th inning and a total of 6 on the night with 2 walks and 6 strikeouts.The Cubs offense looked flat and they came out swinging against Brian Moehler. The soft tossing righty retired the Cubs on just 4 pitches in the 1st inning and threw a total of 87 in 7 innings. The Cubs success in the first half was based a lot on plate discipline and on Friday night they reverted back to their free-swinging ways.The Cubs managed only 1 run, a solo home run by Jim Edmonds leading off the 5th inning and totaled only 4 hits on the night. Brian Moehler and Geoff Geary retired the last 13 batters they faced after a double by Mike Fontenot in the 5th.The winning run came in the bottom of the 9th after Miguel Tejada led off the inning on a ground rule double to right center on a 1-2 pitch from Bobby Howry. Hunter Pence followed with a bloop single into left center and Tejada beat the throw from Jim Edmonds.With the loss, the Cubs slipped to 7 games under .500 on the road at 20-27. The Cubs play 10 of the next 14 games on the road and Lou Piniella has preached for the past several days the importance of a fast start following the break.Ted Lilly, Carlos Zambrano and Ryan Dempster are scheduled to start the three games in Houston and the Cubs offense will have their hands full against three Astros' pitchers they have not fared too well against in the past.According to a report by Paul Sullivan, the Cubs have recalled Micah Hoffpauir from Triple A Iowa and Sullivan speculated either Kevin Hart or Neal Cotts will be sent down to make room on the active roster....the Cubs have not made an official announcement. Sullivan also stated Scott Eyre is ready to return from the DL after completing his rehab start.Rich Hill was scheduled to pitch for Class A Daytona on Thursday but the game was postponed due to rain. Hill will start tonight's game against the Fort Myers Miracle.A report from Bruce Miles mentioned the recent rumors surrounding Khalil Greene. Miles stated his sources "emphatically" told him the Cubs are not interested in the Padres' shortstop. Miles did state the Cubs could be one of several teams interested in Brian Fuentes of the Rockies.On a sad note, Dustin Eglseder passed away on Wednesday night from bone cancer. Eglseder won the first Take Me Out to the Ballgame contest last season and kicked off the Cubs Convention this past winter with his rendition. The Cubs figure to make at least one more move before the trading deadline at the end of the month with some thinking an addition will be made in the bullpen and to add a right handed bat to compliment Daryle Ward off the bench. Right now specific names have not been mentioned, but it could be an interesting couple of weeks....both on and off the field.The Cubs return to work later today in Houston and according to a report on WGN Radio, Micah Hoffpauir worked out with the team on Thursday and will be activated before game time but they did not mention the corresponding roster move. Lou Piniella's crew will begin the second half on Friday in Houston with at least a four game lead over the Cardinals....with the Brewers not far behind. The Cubs must improve on the way they closed out the first 95 games and improve their play away from the Friendly Confines.The Cubs needed the time off the break afforded them and should come back more energized....ready to play on Friday. Alfonso Soriano is scheduled to begin batting practice this weekend and if all goes well should begin a minor league rehab while the rest of his teammates are in Arizona battling the Diamondbacks. Reports after the All-Star game indicated Soriano is targeting to return on July 24th when the Cubs kick-off their first homestand of the second half against the Florida Marlins.Over the next two days, the CCO will look at keys to the Cubs success in the second half. Jim Hendry has already made a big splash with the acquisition of Rich Harden, but 'Trader Jim' has stated he is always looking at ways to improve his team.In the midst of the All-Star festivities, the San Diego Union Tribune ran a report that the Cubs "recently asked about" Khalil Greene. Clint Hurdle will look to end the draught, with Lou Piniella serving as his bench coach, against Terry Francona and the powerful AL lineup.Tonight will be the last All-Star game at Yankee Stadium as the fabled old ballpark is in the middle of a farewell tour of sorts. Several plays and players highlight all of the winning that took place on the North Side of Chicago, but was there one or two players who's individual achievement helped lead Lou Piniella's crew to the best record in the Major Leagues.A good first half by a team or a single player can position the entire organization for an exciting finish to a season and to hopefully reach the ultimate goal of a championship in the little best of seven game series that is annually played in October. Read more >>> July 13, 2008 A Disappointing Ending by Neil | Comments (7) | TrackBack (0) | Category :: Let's Play 2 - Game Recap Game Ninety-Five - Cubs 2 Giants 4 WP - Tim Lincecum (11-2) LP - Ryan Dempster (10-4) Save - Brian Wilson (25)The Cubs finished the first half of the season, unfortunately the same way it began, with a loss at home. In between the Cubs posted a 37-10 record at Wrigley and their 37-12 home mark is the best in the big leagues. Even with the loss, the Cubs finished the last homestand before the break winning 4 of 6 and 19 of their last 23 at the Friendly Confines.Ryan Dempster lost his first game of the year at Wrigley and was both out pitched and out hit by Tim Lincecum. Lincecum not only dominated the Cubs on the mound but he drove in the eventual winning run with his first career triple. In two games against the Cubs pitching staff, Lincecum notched the game winning RBI in each contest.The Giants plated three of their four runs in the 3rd inning. Ray Durham had the big hit, a 2-out, 2 RBI single to right field.The Cubs offense managed only 1 run off Lincecum in 8 innings. Jim Edmonds doubled in Mark DeRosa after DeRosa reached on the only free pass issued by Lincecum. The Cubs had chances in both the 8th and 9th innings and two runners on base in each frame. But Aramis Ramirez could not cash in on the extra chance he received when Bengie Molina dropped a pop up in foul ground. Ramirez grounded into a 5-3 inning ending double play.The Cubs cut the Giants lead to 4-2 in the 9th off of Brian Wilson and put the tying runs on base with only 1 out. Jim Edmonds worked a 1-out walk and advanced to 2nd on a single to center by Reed Johnson. Geovany Soto pinch hit for Henry Blanco and drove in Edmonds with a single to right center. Daryle Ward looked at strike three on the outside corner and Ryan Theriot grounded out to 2nd base to end the game.While Dempster's line from Sunday was respectable....a triple by the pitcher, a walk and a 2-out single was the difference in the game.Chad Gaudin retired 6 of the 7 batters he faced in the last 2 innings to give his team a chance at the comeback. Gaudin struck out 2 in 2 innings of work.Lou Piniella correctly said the Cubs had a very successful first half, especially with all of the injuries they dealt with over the past 6 weeks. For only the seventh time since 1933, the Chicago Cubs are leading their division at the All-Star break. Here are the facts....the Cubs own the best record in all of baseball and the biggest lead of all the other divisional leaders. It figures to be a wild second half of the season on the North Side of Chicago and the Cubs have a long way to go to reach their goal. The Cardinals and Brewers will be in the race for the remainder of the season and until the Reds, Pirates and Astros decide to be sellers they will continue to make the Central Division of the National League the strongest in the Senor Circuit.The Cubs offense will have the tough task of scoring runs today against Tim Lincecum. Lou Piniella said, once again following Saturday's game, that Geovany Soto would receive today off and with Carlos Marmol and Kerry Wood unavailable out of the pen, it will likely be up to Bobby Howry to close it out in the 9th.This has been a tremendous first half of the season and a win today would be a great way to top it off.In other news.... XM Radio's All-Star Futures Game will be played today at 11:30am C.T. at Yankee Stadium. For those interested in seeing one of the top Cubs' prospects in action turn on ESPN 2 or listen to the game on XM Channel 175. Geovany Soto participated in the game last year and this year's contest will feature Welington Castillo. The Double-A catcher has been making a name for himself over the past season and a half in the Cubs' farm system and has drawn comparisons to Yadier Molina and Ivan Rodriguez.Alfonso Soriano will resume taking batting practice in Houston on Friday. A report in the Tribune indicated if everything goes as planned next weekend that Soriano would go on a rehab assignment while the Cubs are in Arizona, July 21-23, and would rejoin his teammates at Wrigley on July 24 to face the Florida Marlins.The baseball world lost one of the true greats in the game on Saturday. Former Cub and lifelong Yankee, Bobby Murcer passed away at the age of 62 due to complications from brain cancer.
