Nals or stone Dumbells have been in use in the Indian bodybuilding scene right from 1100 onwards. These had handles carved in the insides for holding them.
India's bodybuilding history dates back almost all the way back to
1100's. Even in those times there were detailed descriptions of diets
and training techniques.
Bodybuilding was a national passion across India
by the 1500s and today's modern bodybuilding techniques have their
origins when the colonials copied the Indian techniques during their
visits to India and propogated them in the west.
Prof. V K Iyer can be called The father of
modern day Indian bodybuilding. A physician to the Maharaja of Mysore, he
started his gym called Hercules Gym in 1930s in Bangalore.
