Once again, four years have passed and the world is ready for another global reconciliation that we call the Olympics -- this time Summer Olympics. At the turn of the millennium, Sydney will be host to the 27th Summer Olympic Games. But like in any edition of this gigantic celebration of sports, money and finance always play an important role in the equation. Whether it has to with ticket sales, sponsors, advertisers or the just plain deal-with-it things that come along.get your tickets here! As the opening day for the Olympics on Sept. 15th is quickly upon us, ticket sales are not doing as well as anticipated. The first day of over-the-counter ticket sales did not live up to its reputation of generating a large turnover last Friday, June 16th. To spruce up the event, organizers put more than 440,000 Olympic Games tickets on sale for baseball, sailing, boxing, diving, and gymnastics, to name a few. The Sydney organizers were counting on a heavy turnout for the opening of the walk-by first box office recently where avid sports fans can step right up to the counter and purchase Olympic tickets. Only about a dozen individuals, however, actually waited in line to be the first ones to get their hands on tickets. To downplay this matter, Glen-Marie Frost, the SOCOG (Sydney Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games) general manager for communications, explained that she did not anticipate a massive turnout and that this did not indicate a lack of consumer interest, but rather, it meant that the service needed more publicity. Although Frost said, "I think Australians understand the box office," she also mentioned that "they like going to the counter and saying 'where are my seats going to be?' and walking away with something in their hand." Even if no official sales figures were made available from this initial day of ticket sales, the SOCOG still needs to raise approximately another $90 million from the sale of tickets to meet its ticketing budget. About 2.5 million tickets are still left to be sold until the opening day of the games. Ticket sales, however, are as important as keeping big name sponsors and advertisers and making them happy.sponsors and things What is the first thing that an event needs to function smoothly? Money and financing. Right. This is an integral part of any major event, including sporting events that spawn the interest of millions across the world. Golf tournaments, tennis championships and racecar driving competitions all have them. Rather, they all need them. Even if the Sydney Olympics have not undergone any competition yet as the opening day is scheduled for September 15th, the organizers for the Winter Olympics, taking place in Salt Lake City, are in the midst of preparing the event. The United Parcel Service has been talking about dropping its Salt Lake Olympic sponsorship because of ongoing differences with Sydney organizers over the distribution of tickets for the games. It's evident that sponsors are directly related to the event's smooth occurrence or lack thereof. If you can't distribute and get the tickets to the people who want them, then you can't generate revenue to cover your expenses. And the circle becomes a vicious one that will ultimately need to be fed many Benjamins . Next >>
